Giving students a handle on the different ways that language can be manipulated to persuade or move an audience is a huge key to helping them discuss literature, language, speeches and arguments. Whether they have to talk about advertising, political talk or the power of literature, these Language Techniques are the building blocks of a student's discussion.

This pack contains 9 techniques, offered as individual PDFs and PowerPoints. We recommend you work through no more than two or three in a day.

Each Technique is simply defined, followed by simple examples, more sophisticated examples from literature and popular culture, and finally some short playful exercises to get students creating their own examples.

Pack #1 includes:

  • Metaphors
  • Personification
  • Exaggeration (hyperbole)
  • Generalisation
  • Emotive language
  • Rhetorical questions
  • Anecdotes (personalisation)
  • Appeals to Fears
  • Repetition
